Harrogate Decking Enquire

Decking in Harrogate

We design and build decks for Harrogate homes, many of them built from the warm local stone. Getting the material and proportions right next to stone is what we care about most.

Duchy · Harlow Hill · Oatlands · Pannal · Knaresborough · Follifoot

Overview

We build hardwood and composite decks, raised and multi-level decks, glass balustrades and lighting, and replace tired decks across Harrogate, Knaresborough and nearby villages. We bring samples to see against your stone, design around mature gardens and flag conservation-area questions. Visits and quotes are free.

Stone houses

Hardwood or composite with Yorkshire stone?

An honest comparison of the two materials next to Harrogate's honey-coloured stone: looks, weathering and care.

Read the comparison

Stone, gardens and a sense of place

Harrogate's character comes from its stone. The Duchy Estate and the streets around the Valley Gardens are lined with Victorian villas in honey-coloured gritstone, with big windows, slate roofs and gardens planted generations ago. Harlow Hill and Oatlands have handsome Edwardian and 1930s houses, often in stone or stone and render. Villages like Follifoot, Spofforth and Beckwithshaw have stone cottages and farmhouses.

A deck needs to sit comfortably with all of that. The wrong colour or a heavy-looking design can jar against stone. The right one looks as if it has always been there.

Hardwood or composite?

Both work well in Harrogate, but in different ways. Hardwood has a natural warmth and weathers gracefully, which suits stone beautifully. Premium woodgrain composite offers similar tones with far less upkeep. We've written an honest comparison: hardwood vs composite for stone houses.

Whichever you prefer, we bring samples to the visit, so you can see them against your own walls in your own light.

Mature gardens

Many Harrogate gardens have established trees, hedges and borders. We design decks that work with them: building around trunks, protecting roots, leaving planting undisturbed and placing the deck where light falls through the canopy.

Levels and glass

Gardens on the western side of town, towards Harlow and Pannal, often slope. A raised or multi-level deck can step down gracefully, and frameless glass balustrades keep the views across the garden open.

Conservation areas

Much of central Harrogate is in a conservation area. A low deck in a back garden is often fine, but raised decks and listed buildings need more care. We'll flag anything to check with North Yorkshire Council.

Frequently asked

Can a deck replace a tired lawn under big trees?

Often, yes. Grass struggles in deep shade, while a deck can make that space usable. We build around roots without heavy digging, using a frame that spreads the load.

Can you work round a mature garden without damaging it?

Yes. We plan access routes, protect lawns and borders, and agree in advance which plants need moving or protecting.

Do you build decks off garden rooms and orangeries?

Yes. We set the deck just below the threshold so the room flows out onto it, keeping the deck clear of the base and any vents.
